INTRODUCTION Tokyo is one of the most important and exciting cities in the world today. But unlike Paris, New York, or London, specific information is still lacking. Tokyo is generally perceived as being so prohibitively expensive that people are afraid to venture to this part of the world. This is unfortunate, for in reality Japan's capital is a delightful, enriching city with much to offer, even for those on a limited budget.
As a long-term resident of Japan who enjoys traveling, I find myself spending a great deal of time answering questions and explaining to people in other countries what Tokyo is "really like." I have discovered that people are very familiar with Japanese products--but not with Japan itself. One day I learned of an American survey in which respondents were asked to name some well-known Japanese people. The most frequent replies were: Yoko Ono, Godzilla (yes, the fictitious movie-monster), and Bruce Lee (the Chinese martial arts expert).
I started to wonder if there was something I might do to remedy this lack of information about Japan--and at the same time help overcome people's "fear of coming to Tokyo" that seemed to prevail so strongly. I began to search out attractions and activities with a "zero yen" price tag on them, intending to write a travel article about spending time in Tokyo without spending a fortune. Well, I found more than I bargained for, and soon Tokyo for Free took on a life of its own. There is no question that the book was out there, just waiting to be written. And I feel very fortunate to have been the one who was given the opportunity to do so.
I certainly don't claim to cover everything there is to know about Tokyo in this book (that would take volumes), but I sincerely hope that my effort will offer you a little insight into the simple pleasures that make up the day-to-day lifestyle of the city. For isn't that what determines what a city is "really like," after all? I hope you will enjoy Tokyo for Free and appreciate the spirit in which it was written--with much love for one of the world's most intriguing cities.

"Ja, ich habe Heimweh" gibt Zhou Chun offen zu, "ich bin doch nicht anders als die vielen Chinesen im Ausland, die am Ende ihres Lebens gerne in ihre Heimmat zurückkkehren möchten. - Das Laub fällt zur Baumwurzel nieder - nennen wir das."
Zhou Chun, geboren 1926 in Shanghai, lebte seit dem Massaker auf dem Platz des Himmlischen Friedens 1988 als Gastprofessor, Journalist und Autor in Berlin. Von 1949 bis 1955 war er erster Dolmetscher für Deutsch im Außenministerium der Volksrepublik China, übersetzte u.a. für Mao Zedong und Zhou Enlai. Die Jahre von 1957 bis 1979 verbrachte er als sogenannter Rechtsabweichler in Straflagern und in der Verbannung.
Nach seinem viel beachteten autobiographischen Roman "Ach, was für ein Leben!" hat Zhou Chun nun kurz vor der Rückkehr nach China einen zweiten Roman auf Deutsch vorgelegt: "Tochter der Partei". Dem Roman liegt das Schicksal seiner Schwester zu Grunde, die sich auf Drängen der KP von Ihrem Mann trennen mußte.
